2018 Races: #8 - Firecracker 10K!
This was a GREAT race!
My dad and I ran this last year and decided to do it again because why not? It was HOT last year and it was HOT today!!! But we laced up our shoes and got out there. Last year there maybe 100 people at most running this 10K and 1-miler--this year there was more, maybe closer to 200-250, probably because they added a 5K option as well. Which is smart on their part because those are more popular than a 10K. It was still small, though.
Anyway, we got downtown and at 8AM it was already close to 80 degrees--woof. I knew I was going to have to walk a lot because I was fighting Vertigo so I didn't want to push it too much. I felt OK until mile 2 when I needed to walk a little. Thankfully the course was mostly flat, but it was also mostly sunny--I loaded up with sunscreen before the race started!! I walked on and off the whole race, so I don't have much to report on that.
BUT, around mile 3, I decided to just take off my tank top because it was so hot it didn't matter anymore. I am thankful that I have developed the confidence over the past few years to be able to run in a sports bra and not care about what I look like to others :) I used my tank as a sweat towel the rest of the race LOL!!!
I didn't see my dad on the turn around so I knew he opted for the shorter 5K instead of the 10K due to the heat. It was great to see him at the finish line cheering for me with a cup of water!! I finished in 1:15:56, which is really great considering I haven't run much and the heat was rough....but my watch also said 6.07 miles so not quite a 10K. Still, a great race. I also got to cheer on my friend's mom as she finished a little after me!!
I remember this race last year just being small and not very well staffed--they needed more water stops due to the heat, or at least Gatorade and COLD water. There was only water at the finish line, but my dad saw some people with bananas, we just couldn't find them. I think if you're going to have a race during the summer, you should be overly prepared for bad conditions so that your runners don't get sick. Overall, it wasn't a bad race, it just wasn't my favorite I've run. But I'm glad I got to run it with my dad!! :)
